What is Steampunk?

Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, especially in a Victorian or Edwardian setting. Steampunk works are often set in an alternative history of the 19th century’s British Victorian era or American “Wild West”, in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has regained mainstream use, or in a fantasy world that similarly employs steam power.

The term steampunk originated as a tongue-in-cheek variant on cyberpunk. It was originally coined by science fiction author K. W. Jeter and first appeared as the title of his 1987 novel The Difference Engine, which takes place in an alternate 1855 where computers were never invented and the British Empire rules America through their control of the new mechanical calculators (steamships and railroads).

The Victorian Era, Industrial Revolution, and the Birth of Steampunk

The Victorian Era, Industrial Revolution, and the Birth of Steampunk are all significant events in the history of England. They are also major influences on the Steampunk genre.

Industrial Revolution: The Industrial Revolution was a period of rapid industrial growth in Europe and North America from 1760 to 1840. It changed the way people lived and worked by introducing new technologies that increased production levels, created jobs for unskilled workers, changed work methods, and brought about social changes.

Victorian Era: The Victorian era was an era when Britain was ruled by Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901. It is often associated with a time when Britain’s dominance as an imperial power reached its peak along with its economic prosperity due to industrialisation.

Celebrating Creativity in a Post-Industrial World

Creativity is the lifeblood of our post-industrial world. It is what drives innovation and change, and without it we are doomed to stagnation. But creativity is not a quality that can be easily quantified or captured in a formula, so how do we measure it?

Creativity is often thought of as the ability to produce something new and original. But this definition does not capture the essence of creativity which should also include the ability to communicate an idea effectively and bring about social change.

Creativity can be applied in many different fields like art, design, science, technology, engineering etc., so there are many different types of creative people out there. Creative people are usually very passionate about their work and they have a high level of emotional intelligence which helps them understand how other people feel. They also have very active imaginations which allow them to think outside the box and come up with new ideas.

You can see this creativity in the products we offer. We currently have a range of Steampunk pocket watches, but we will be expanding into other products. Watch this space, or sign up for our newletter below, and we will let you know when we have more products available to you.

How does Steampunk Influence TTRPG?

Steampunk is a genre of science fiction that is set in the Victorian era. Steampunk has a strong focus on Victorian-era culture and technology, which includes steam power, clockwork mechanisms, and other technologies of the Industrial Revolution. It also typically features anachronistic technologies as well as ideas from the modern era.

Steampunk has influenced tabletop roleplaying games in many different ways. One way is by providing a rich world with a lot of detail for players to explore and interact with. Other ways include using steampunk elements to make games more thematic or adding them into existing games to add some variety or uniqueness to gameplay.
